THE BROWN FAMILY

The Brown Family was one of the free Black families that settled in the Barren Creek District, which was later divided, with part of it becoming the Sharptown District by 1860. In Sharptown, the Brown family made their home in San Domingo and built the first church, Mt. Zion Methodist Church.

James Brown was born circa 1792, and his wife, Betsy Brown, was born circa 1792. They lived in the Barren Creek District of Somerset County, Maryland. In 1832, the County Sheriff took a special census of all the free Blacks living in Somerset County, Maryland. James and Betsy Brown were listed among these families. Their children were the following:

  • Harriett Brown, born circa 1816

  • Byard Brown, born circa 1819

  • Leonard Brown, born circa 1821

  • Ardilla Brown, born circa 1824

  • Eliza Brown, born circa 1827

  • Emmetine Brown, born circa 1830

  • Mary Brown, born circa 1834

It was the descendants of Leonard Brown who migrated to Wetipquin. James Littleton, a son of Leonard and Mary Brown, was born September 2, 1844, in Sharptown, Somerset County, Maryland. He died September 9, 1925, in Wetipquin, Wicomico County, Maryland. He was buried in Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sharptown, Maryland. His wife was Hester Wainwright Brown. She was born circa 1854 in Somerset County, Maryland. Their children were:

  • Ardilla Brown

  • George H. Brown

  • William Woolford Brown

  • Leonard Brown

  • Lula Brown

Ardilla Brown was born circa 1871 in Wicomico County, Maryland. On November 30, 1887, she married John R. Hull.

George H. Brown was born in June 1873 in Quantico, Wicomico County, Maryland. He died in December 1941. On February 12, 1896, he married Leah Ella Lankford of Wetipquin. She was born in January 1876 in Wetipquin, Wicomico County, Maryland. She died on August 17, 1903, and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Wetipquin. Her parents were Arnold Freeborn Lankford and Mary Ann Wright Lankford of Wetipquin. Their child was:

  • James Brown, born April 1894 in Wetipquin, Wicomico County, Maryland

George H. Brown's second marriage was on December 16, 1908, to Louvina Seldon of Wetipquin. She was born in July 1887 in Wetipquin, Maryland. She died in September 1971 in Ocean City, New Jersey, and was buried in the Conway Family Cemetery in Wetipquin. Her parents were George and Matilda Jane Hull Seldon of Wetipquin.

William Woolford Brown was born May 1876 in Wetipquir Maryland. He married Martha Hull circa 1889 in Wetipquin She was born July 1881 in Wetipquin. Her Parents were Franklin Hull and Eliza Cook Hull of Wetipquin. children were:

  • William Edward Brown

Leonard Brown was born circa 1877 in Wetipquin, Maryland.
