THE MOORE FAMILY

In 1832, all counties in Maryland were required to conduct a special census of all free Blacks. Among these free Blacks living in Barren Creek, the first district of Somerset County, was a young mother named Betsy Moore, age 45, and her seven children. Their names were:

  1. Sally Moore, age 23

  2. Noah Moore, age 20

  3. Elzey Moore, age 15

  4. Elizabeth Moore, age 12

  5. Della Moore, age 10

  6. Zosiah Moore, age 7

  7. Jeremiah Moore, age 4

  8. William Moore, age 2

The Moore family lineage in Wetipquin began when Noah and Zosiah Moore moved to Wetipquin, married, and reared their families.

He married Catherine Wright in July 1840 in Somerset County, Maryland. She was born circa 1811 in Wetipquin and died circa 1852-1859. Her parents were Stephen and Methia Dutton Wright of Wetipquin. Their children were:

Louisa Moore married Samuel James Chase (see Chase Family records).
George H. Moore was born circa 1844 in Wetipquin, Maryland.
James H. Moore was born June 9, 1847, in Wetipquin. He died June 6, 1922, and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Wetipquin. On February 20, 1869, he married Sarah E. Raleigh. She was born January 24, 1847, died April 16, 1921, and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Wetipquin. Her parents were Adam Raleigh and Harriet Phillips Raleigh. Their children were:

Mary M. Moore's first marriage was to David Chase (see Chase Family records). Her second marriage was to Washington Hopkins of Sharptown, Maryland. There was no issue from the second marriage.
Emily Moore was born circa 1849 in Wetipquin.
Wesley Moore was born circa 1851 in Wetipquin.

The Second Generation

Mary M. Moore married Charles McCoy (see McCoy Family records).
Noah H. Moore was born circa 1873 in Wetipquin and died April 18, 1928, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. His wife was Maggie E. Thomas of Washington, DC. Their children were:

George Albert Moore was born in August 1875 in Wetipquin, died, and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Wetipquin. He married Dana Alina Dashiell on December 30, 1896, in Tyaskin, Maryland. She was born in August 1879 in Wetipquin, died in September 1959, and was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Wetipquin. Her parents were William Dashiell and Emily Gale Dashiell. Their children were:

  3. Grant Moore

  4. Sarah Moore

  5. Mable Moore

  7. Lillian Moore

Sarah Annie Mae Moore was born May 21, 1877, and died June 24, 1911, in Wicomico County, Maryland. She married William S. Nutter on September 30, 1896, of Nanticoke, Maryland. Their children were:

  3. Irene Nutter

Julia Ellen Moore married John Wesley Barclay (see Barclay Family records).
Hettie L. Moore was born in November 1883 in Wetipquin, died January 25, 1896, and was buried in Friendship United Church Cemetery in Wetipquin.
