Wetipquin Baptist Church

The Wetipquin Baptist Church has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. On October 20, 1850, Levin C. Smith of Somerset County (which later became Wicomico County), Maryland, deeded land in Wetipquin to John H. Philips, John A. Scarborough, Ichabud D. Hearn, James R.W. Conway, and Christopher C. Donoho, the first trustees of the Wetipquin Neck Baptist Church.

Wicomico marriage records document that Minister C.C. Donoho of Wetipquin Baptist Church officiated a marriage ceremony for Joseph Parker, age 27, and Julia A. Dashiell, age 16, a black couple, on April 28, 1869.

Several individuals are buried in the church cemetery, as noted in Mr. John Jacob's book "Grave Yards in Wicomico County before 1900." These individuals include:

  • Leah A. Hopkins (born circa 1801, died December 23, 1862, age 54)

  • Elizabeth R. Jackson (born March 13, 1874, died November 16, 1874, age 35)

  • Annie Jackson (born December 30, 1866, died September 1, 1880, age 13)

  • Elisha G. Owens (born June 21, 1810, died January 16, 1887, age 77)

The 1877 Atlas lists a Baptist Church located on Wetipquin Road (Road No. 455) in the Tyaskin District.

On April 16, 1918, Joseph F. Byrd, the surviving trustee of Wetipquin Neck Baptist Church, deeded the property to the trustees of the Division Street Baptist Church in Salisbury, Maryland. This transaction is recorded in Wicomico County Land Records, Liber JOK No. 109, folio 55.

The property is currently owned by the heirs of Lewis A. Conway and Julia Seldon Conway, and the cemetery continues to be used by the Conway/Seldon family.
